If you really want to get him back, then you will need to show him what he is missing, and looking fantastic is an important part of this, despite it sounding extremely shallow.

Most importantly of all, if he is really the man for you, don't give up. You can get him back if you work at it and you really want it to happen, so keep trying. A break up does not have to mean that you will not be able to make it work in the future, so if you want this, go for it.
